On 7 May 2025, the Education, Culture and Sport Department of Riga Local Government hosted a partner meeting of the Erasmus+ project “Implementoring Healthy Meal for All”.
“Our children deserve not only high-quality education but also healthy and tasty meals every day. This project provides us with the opportunity to learn from international partners and collectively improve the quality of school catering in Riga, ensuring every child feels cared for and valued. Cooperation with our international partners will help us implement best practices from across Europe,” emphasised Laima Geikina, Chair of the Education, Culture and Sports Committee of the Riga City Council.

As a result of the project, an Action Plan for Improving the Provision of Healthy Meals in Riga’s educational institutions will be developed. The project will also strengthen cooperation among all stakeholders, draw on experience gained from international partners, and share newly acquired knowledge and developed materials—including a study on healthy nutrition for pupils and a methodological toolkit for the provision of healthy and sustainable food. These resources will be disseminated to educational institutions and school catering companies throughout Riga.

Participants of this meeting included Laima Geikina, Chair of the Riga City Council’s Education, Culture and Sports Committee; Andris Priekulis, Headmaster of Riga Secondary School No. 3; representatives from the Education, Culture and Sport Department and Education Support Division which are responsible for public health and catering oversight; and representatives from Riga’s leading school caterers - Fristar and Baltic Restaurants Latvia. International guests included representatives from the Education Cluster of Cluj-Napoca Municipality in Romania, and from the international organisation Rikolto, based in Leuven, Belgium, which addresses global food security issues.
The meeting agenda focused on discussing Riga’s proposed Action Plan for improving school meal quality. The Plan emphasises enhanced collaboration between schools and catering providers to ensure meals are well-prepared and served in welcoming dining environments. The development of the Plan involved Riga’s school catering companies and school nurses, who are responsible for food quality control.
Following the meeting, participants visited Riga Secondary School No. 3 to observe its catering practices, as well as Riga Preschool No. 154 and Riga Teika Secondary School. These visits included discussions with caterers and school representatives on how to best provide healthy meals to preschool children and pupils in general education schools. Special attention was given to aspects such as the layout of dining areas, methods of food presentation, the possibility for pupils to choose their meals, and the amount of time allocated for eating.
Partner meeting of the Erasmus+ project “Implementoring Healthy Meal for All” brought together local and international stakeholders to advance the quality and accessibility of healthy school meals in Riga through shared expertise and collaboration.
